Pine trees line the rather yellow
sand on the south end and the more white sand at the
northern end of the very long Kao Lak beach.
In the rainy season the clouds coming
on from the Indian
Ocean
stall on the hills along the coast from
Mergui or Myeik
in
Myanmar down to Khao Lak and bring
plenty of rain.
The other month from about
November to May the sun is out almost every day. Just the
right place for a lazy Khao Lak beach vacation. There is
nothing around in Khao Lak but beach, beach resorts and some
small villages along the excellent road from Phuket to
Ranong.
The region from
Ranong down to Khao Lak is
Thailand Muslim county,
in every town and hamlet along the excellent road one
can see small mosques from where the the voices of the muezzins can
be heard, -
not direct in the center of Khao Lak- . Men with the
Hajji cap and women with the scarf are common.
Rather seldom are totally covered women where
one only see the
eyes, I wonder how they can stand this immense heat and especially
the humidity, it must be like a moving sauna under this black cloth. Sometimes the spirit houses show a
different direction of believe.
Khao Lak was a tragic place in southern Thailand's
Tsunami disaster.

approximately.
August 2007 the situation was back to normal
- landownership disputes are still on - and unfortunately prices have increased
more than it should be.
It's more expensive now in Khao Lak -
in general- as in
Phuket. |
Khao Lak is rather a
family vacation destination, there are none of
the usual entertainment venues like in Phuket and
elsewhere. The ideal place to go with kids or maybe
a Thailand honeymoon vacation.

Khao Lak is an excellent destination for quality diving around the Similan Islands which are just off Khao Lak. The Similan islands are nine islands within the marine national park.
The beaches are pristine and the dive spots marvelous, among of the most attractive in the world. Colorful reefs and granite boulder formations give a special touch with a abundant marine life. Visibility is between 30 to 50m.
Just book a one day or multiday livea board dive trip in one of the travel agents, dive shops or hotels.
The Similans are not accessible during the low season due to the weather in the Andaman Sea. |
The Khao Lak area is not very developed, it still has it's native charm, with lush tropical jungle, beautiful rivers and a very
slow moving life without go go and all the entertainment venues Thailand is known for.
