The first Phuket Kings Cup Regatta
was held in 1987
to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the
King of Thailand.
Since then it
became Asia’s premier sailing and
yachting race event and held every year in
the first week of December to commemorate
His Majesty’s birthday on December 5th.
This year -
2007- 95 boats from all over Asia,
Australia, Europe and other countries
participated in the Phuket Kings
Cup Regatta in several categories, sail boat
racing and cruising, catamaran racing and
cruising and other.
The event was perfectly
organized. We watched the Phuket - Kings Cup Regatta from the “Seraph” a gaff -
rigged schooner of about 20 m length chartered for
the media people.
The “Seraph” is
almost 100 years old but looks like new,
in absolut perfect condition. There were two TV crews;
some more photographer, writer and other
media people on
board, everyone had a great time in watching
the maneuvering of the yachts,
catamarans and smaller sail boats.
There were a number of battles played out
on Phuket's south west coast,
Some of the
crews did it really the hard way trying
to block the wind for the other boat and
there was also one accident when one sailing
boat banged into the backboard of an other.
The mast was
slashed, the side ripped off and one of
the boats quickly
